This year, we’re proud to celebrate 120 years of The Manhattan Center.
120 years ago, in 1906, Oscar Hammerstein opened the doors to what was then the Manhattan Opera House. His vision was bold: to create a cultural home that could rival the Metropolitan Opera. He didn’t just succeed; he created a legacy that would outlive the initial opera focus and evolve into something even greater, the leading event venue in NYC for large private and public events.
A lot has changed in New York since 1906, and the Manhattan Center has evolved right alongside it. But one thing hasn’t changed: we’re still here in our original home on West 34th Street, welcoming event planners, promoters, corporations, associations, media companies, and performers from around the globe.
From the golden age of Vaudeville to the electric energy of modern rock, rap and pop concerts, corporate galas and all types of celebrations, we’ve stood the test of time as NYC’s premier event venue.
A Legacy Set in Stone
Few venues in New York can claim to be “going strong” in their original location after more than a century. Steeped in iconic NYC history, we have transformed from an opera house to a Masonic temple and finally to The Manhattan Center, a name synonymous with world-class entertainment and event management services. We are proud to bridge the gap between historic grandeur and 21st-century production.
Two Iconic Venues, One Historic Address
Our 120-year story is best told through our two legendary event spaces, which continue to host the city’s most prestigious private and public events:
- The Hammerstein Ballroom: The crown jewel of our center. With its soaring 75-foot ceiling, hand-painted artistry and classic opera boxes, this 35,000-square-foot masterpiece is where history meets volume. Capable of hosting up to 3,500 guests for concerts or 800 for an elegant seated dinner, the Hammerstein remains the go-to location for massive product launches, award shows, and legendary musical performances.
- The Grand Ballroom: For those seeking a majestic yet intimate experience, the Grand Ballroom on the 7th floor offers a distinct acoustic perfection. Added to the building in 1922, this space features a 40-foot vaulted ceiling and capacity for 1,200 guests. It is a favorite for orchestras, fashion shows, meetings and private galas that demand a touch of old-world elegance combined with a modern versatility.
Where History Meets High-Tech: Our State-of-the-Art Studios
We aren’t just a venue; we are a creative powerhouse. Hidden within our historic walls are some of the most advanced recording and production facilities in the world, serving top-tier artists and broadcasters:
- The Log Cabin (Studio 4): A rustic, wood-and-stone escape in the heart of Midtown. This legendary studio features a Neve VR72 console and has hosted icons ranging from David Bowie to Jay-Z, offering a “country home” vibe with world-class sound.
- Studio 7: A technical marvel directly connected to our ballrooms. This connection allows for pristine live recording of large-scale events, making us one of the only venues in NYC capable of recording a full orchestra or live concert in high fidelity instantly.
- TV & Podcasting: We have evolved with the media landscape, offering fully equipped TV production stages (TV1 & TV2) and podcasting studios to ensure your content looks and sounds as good as the venue feels.
There’s a Reason We’ve Lasted This Long
