Where New York History Takes the Stage
Manhattan Center: Celebrating 120 Years of New York History
For over 120 years, Manhattan Center has shaped New York’s cultural and event history, uniting world-class performances, broadcasts, and landmark gatherings under one iconic roof.
A Legacy Built on Bold Dreams & Quiet Excellence
This year marks a defining milestone for the Manhattan Center as we celebrate its 120th Anniversary. For more than a century, our iconic facility has stood at the intersection of culture, art, commerce, communications, and innovation here in New York City.
Since opening in 1906, the Manhattan Center has evolved from a daring opera house into one of the city’s most versatile and respected destinations for premier public and private events.
While celebrating this anniversary, we look back with gratitude at the generations of performers, creators, visionaries, leaders, and guests who have brought our venues to life. At the same time, we look ahead to the future we will build together with our sustaining and new clients.

1906: The Vision of Oscar Hammerstein
Our story began with a singular and audacious vision.
In 1906, legendary impresario Oscar Hammerstein I built the Manhattan Opera House with a clear purpose: to challenge the status quo and bring the grandeur of opera to a broader audience. He didn’t simply build a venue — he created a “people’s opera house” that rivaled the established Metropolitan Opera in quality while surpassing it in accessibility.
Hammerstein’s belief that great art belongs to everyone remains a principle that still echoes throughout our ballrooms today. Though the “Opera War” of the early 20th century eventually ended, the spirit of that era — bold, inclusive, innovative, and uncompromising in quality — continues to define The Manhattan Center.
A Stage for History
Over the last century, our walls have witnessed the transformation of entertainment itself.
The Golden Age of Acoustics
In 1926, our Grand Ballroom was chosen by Warner Bros. to record the score for Don Juan, the very first commercial film with an integrated music score. That historic first set us on the path towards becoming one of the world’s finest recording facilities.
A Musical Sanctuary
From the baton of Leonard Bernstein to the electric energy of the Grateful Dead and David Bowie, and from the modern sounds of Taylor Swift and Alicia Keys, the Manhattan Center has long been a trusted partner for legendary artists across generations.
A Broadcast Pioneer
Manhattan Center was the birthplace of Monday Night Raw and a trusted home for modern television productions, proving that a historic venue can continue to lead through innovation and technology.
A Gathering Place for Influence
From global media companies such as Amazon and Fox, to Fortune 500 organizations like Salesforce and Netflix, to nonprofit leaders including We Are Family and Haymakers for Hope, the Manhattan Center has become the destination for organizations with a vision to promote and celebrate.
The Manhattan Center Today
Today, 120 years later, Manhattan Center remains the heartbeat of Midtown Manhattan’s event landscape — home to two distinctive venues: the majestic Hammerstein Ballroom and the elegant Grand Ballroom.
We are proud to be the sought-after destination for:
- Global Corporate Events, Upfronts & Fundraisers
- Star-Studded Galas & Red Carpet Experiences
- Immersive Product Launches, Fashion Shows & Sporting Events
- Film score and Broadway cast albums
- The launch of new television enterprises and programming
While we host some of New York City’s largest private and public gatherings, we remain humble stewards of a historic landmark.
We understand that every event hosted here becomes part of this storied venue. We treat that responsibility with the same passion and dedication Oscar Hammerstein embodied when he first opened these doors in 1906.
